What do my taxes have to do with my ACA health insurance plan?

Feb 25, 2025 | News

Having a health plan through the marketplace can affect your taxes in a few ways, especially when it comes to the Premium Tax Credit and reporting income. Here’s how it typically works:

  1. Premium Tax Credit:
  • Subsidies: If you qualify for a plan through the marketplace, you may be eligible for a Premium Tax Credit to help lower your monthly premiums. The amount you get depends on your household income and federal poverty level.
  • Reconciliation at Tax Time: When you file your tax return, you’ll need to reconcile any advance payments with the actual Premium Tax Credit you qualify for. If you received more than you were eligible for, you may owe money. If you received less, you could get a refund.
  1. Income Reporting:
  • When you apply for an ACA plan, you’ll need to provide estimated income information, which is used to calculate your premium subsidies. If your income changes during the year, you should update your information through your agent or the marketplace.
  • Incorrect Estimates: If your actual income ends up being higher than what you estimated, you may have to pay back some of the advance premium tax credits you received. Conversely, if your income was lower than estimated, you might get additional credits when you file your taxes.
  1. Form 1095-A:
  • The marketplace will send you a Form 1095-A, which reports the amount of premiums you paid and the advance premium tax credits you received throughout the year. You’ll use this form when you file your taxes.

In summary, the main impact is about reconciling your premiums and credits when you file taxes, and potentially adjusting income estimates during the year to avoid surprises. Keep track of any changes in your household income and report them to your agent or the marketplace to avoid having to pay back.
