Pregnancy

Sep 18, 2024 | Individual Insurance

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), pregnancy and maternity care are covered as essential health benefits. This includes:

  1. Prenatal Care: Regular check-ups and screenings during pregnancy.
  2. Labor and Delivery: Coverage for childbirth, including hospital stays and necessary medical procedures.
  3. Postnatal Care: Care after delivery for both the mother and the baby, including follow-up visits.

Insurance plans are required to cover these services without charging extra for pre-existing conditions related to pregnancy. This means that insurance companies cannot deny coverage or increase premiums based on pregnancy status.

Additionally, the ACA mandates that preventive services related to pregnancy, such as counseling on breastfeeding and certain screenings, be provided without cost-sharing (i.e., without requiring co-pays or deductibles).

However, it’s worth noting that coverage details can vary by plan, so it’s a good idea to review specific policy documents or speak with an insurance representative to understand the full extent of your benefits
